- Suikoden (Playstation)
Suikoden was released when the Playstation was an RPG juggernaut and seemed to be generating quality turn-based dungeon crawling game after game. In Suikoden you play the son of a well respected general of the Scarlet Moon Empire, Teo Mcdohl; after your father is sent to do battle in the north, the emperors’ true nature is revealed and you are eventually betrayed and considered an enemy of the state. Joining you on your quest for revenge are the people who helped raised you, Neo, Cleo, your father Teo, and…Ted (he serves mainly as the handicap for the group, always slowing them up with his bitching and moaning). Eventually you come into contact with an underground rebel army and after a series of twists and intrigue you become the rebel leader. This is when the game really picks up as you gain control of your own upgradeable castle. Your main goal is to overthrow the evil emperor of the Scarlet Moon Emperor but along the way you encounter what are known as the 108 Stars of Destiny, each of which can join your fledgling army and help you rebuild your castle. You will also uncover what are known as the 27 Runes of Truth, which are magic stones that give the user mystical powers.
Suikoden uses the standard turn-based fighting system, however there are one-on-one duels, as well as large-scale battles in which you command your army of rebels against the Scarlet Moon forces. The game itself isn’t that long and doesn’t feature any kind of cut scenes; however you’ll spend hours trying to meet the criteria needed to recruit all 108 Stars. This game spawned a number of sequels and prequels that didn’t live up to the quality of the first game.
